Addicted to Music

Ever heard a song on a loop and had that feeling that the song should go on playing and you simply wish that the tune doesn’t end at all? Well, it is second to none. Total addiction to music. Total addiction to tune. It has the power to surmount any soul and that’s why certain music are called soul-stirring. Today, I am in a hurry to write down something to keep up the flow. All I could come up with a list of lesser known songs that could potentially blow your mind away if you are one such lover of soul-stirring music.

The first one on the list is “ketenna unnai” from Desham. It was composed by A R Rahman, the Mozart of Madras and no doubt it is a masterpiece of a music. Forget the lyrics and just start listening to the background music and the interludes. Its sheer experimental feel is sure to blow you away. Many of you would not have heard this song at all. It’s from the dubbed version of the Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Swades”. The surprise is the clever reuse of the tune earlier used in BaBa, a tamil Rajnikanth starrer. But this song is original in vocals and instrumentation and of course an addictive song.

Let’s go international this time. I have to tell the truth that no one except A R Rahman has ever made me get addicted to a song completely for days that I heard one song and one song only. Only till I was introduced to several other streaks of mind blowing music from the international and other contemporary composers of India.

The one song that I got addicted to recently was, ”Just the way you are” by Bruno Mars. He’s known for his lyrical quality of songs and this one is just awesome. Just listen to it once and chances are that you’ll have to listen to it again (and this goes on).

Ok. Let me explain something behind this addiction. Why do we get addicted to songs and how does this actually happen? There is a prevalent notion that A R Rahman’s music grows on you. It’s like a wine the old it gets the better is sounds. I recently read about this phenomenon and it is due to pattern formations in our brain.

May be while you hear these songs for the first time, you may not appreciate them because it is new kind of approach to music you have never been exposed to in the whole of your life. But when you hear it again and again, your brain starts recognizing the pattern and the dopamine never stops. You are sure to get addicted when you develop a taste. This addiction can blind you away from other sub-standard music coming your way and that is a good thing because you can stay unpolluted.

I will be soon with a list of so many more “lesser known” masterpieces in music and movies. Keep Calm and wait till then.
