The Split-Personality Disorder

I used to get these weird thoughts at times that may be I am suffering from a split-personality disorder. Now it turns out that 80% of the Indians are too. So now I am relieved that I am not alone.

I’ll just talk about my problem here. According to the author of “How to be Creative?” all creative people have two kinds of jobs. The one that gives them cash to pay the bills and the other one which is their passion. He called it the “sex and cash theory”.

Well I seem to be affected by the same split personality problem. I want to code for cash and film for fun. It’s not simple switching hats between two very different fields. But there are millions doing it effortlessly everyday across the world. So this has been the way of life of creative people for centuries.

I tell you, there are advantages in being two different jobs simultaneously. You will appreciate the heck of each job. What you don’t get from one job you will have in surplus in the other one. The thrill that you crave for can be had from your passion but the chores that you are very good at but not really interested in will feed you and your family.

The break you take from your day job can be used to contemplate on your passion. It will enhance the experience when you indulge in your hobby. It’s the regulated restrain that leads to rejoice. So when you don’t spend your entire day in the job of your choice, you will have high intensity of creativity and energy flowing out of you when you finally do the work of your desire. It may be strumming the strings after a hectic day of work or taking your paint brush and start working on your masterpiece in the midnight while the whole town sleeps. Anything that you do after long hours of work, if it interests you so much then you will feel the rush of awesomeness come out of you.

Try out this exercise. Once you are home after a long journey or a busy day, try gathering your thoughts and putting them all down in written words. You’ll surely be amazed! The day job and the usual stress associated with it will act as a reservoir of all the ideas that are generated within you. Unlike people who strive for a peaceful environment for brainstorming, the most irritated mind will be most creative but only if you invest your energy. We all know that when a reservoir is opened the flow of water is very high. That accounts for the rush of creativity after work when you indulge in your passion.

You might have heard a lot of writers who wrote masterpieces burning the midnight oil after a hectic work schedule in the day. That effectively proves the power of the restrained creative string. When this string is released to vibrate the tune it produces will be the best. Try out this exercise. Once you are home after a long journey or a busy day, try gathering your thoughts and putting them all down in written words. You’ll surely be amazed!
